Corporate Office HQ 

Samancor Chrome’s Corporate Office is located in Sandton, Gauteng and serves all our business units across the North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces.  

Eastern Chrome Mines ECM 

ECM is located in the Steelpoort valley (approximately 350km from Johannesburg) along a 100-kilometre stretch of the eastern rim of the Bushveld Igneous Complex, and comprises of three underground mines, two opencast mines, four surface beneficiation plants and four tailings re-treatment plants. 

Western Chrome Mines WCM 

WCM is situated approximately 130km north-west of Johannesburg, close to the town of Mooinooi in the North West Province, and comprises of three underground mines, two surface beneficiation plants and two tailings re-treatment plants. 

Dikwena Chrome DCR 

In 2019 Samancor Chrome acquired the operation and transferred them into a separate entity named Dikwena Chrome. The plant is situated just outside of Brits, North West Province and is close to WCM. The core business of the operation is the production of charge chrome using four closed SAFs, a metal recovery plant, and two Pellet and Sintering Plants (PSP). 

Ferrometals FMT 

FMT is situated in Emalahleni (formerly called Witbank), Mpumalanga, and is one of the largest individual ferrochrome plants in the world and produces charge chrome for steel markets. FMT is the base from which several joint ventures operate, including Crometals (Pty) Ltd, Poschrome (Pty) Ltd and Elkem Ferroveld. 

Middelburg Ferrochrome MFC 

MFC is situated in Middelburg, Mpumalanga and was established in 1964 as a Low Carbon Ferrochrome production facility. Charge chrome was first produced on this site in 1974 by Middelburg Steel and Alloys (Pty) Ltd, which was acquired by Samancor in 1991, making it one of only a few alloy plants in the world able to produce both charge chrome and low carbon ferrochrome, which it stopped producing in 2015. It currently produces charge chrome from two Submerged-Arc Furnaces (SAF’s), two Direct-Current (DC) Furnaces, a Pelletising and Sintering plant (PSP) and a metal recovery plant.   

TC Smelter TCS 

In 2016 Samancor Chrome acquired the assets of the operation and transferred them into a separate entity named TC Smelters (PTY) Limited. The plant is situated in Mooinooi, North West Province and is adjacent to WCM. The core business of the operation is the production of charge chrome using two closed SAFs, a metal recovery plant, and a Pellet and Sintering Plant (PSP).  

Tubatse Alloy TAS 

In 2017 Samancor Chrome, together with Sinosteel, acquired the assets of the operation through a separate legal entity called Tubatse Alloy (PTY) Ltd. The smelting complex is situated in the Burgersfort area of the Limpopo Province and is in close proximity to Samancor Chrome’s Eastern Chrome Mines and Tubatse Ferrochrome smelting operation. The core business of Tubatse Alloy is the production of charge chrome using two closed submerged arc Furnaces, two semi-closed submerged arc Furnaces, a Pelletising and Sintering Plant (PSP) and a metal recovery plant.  

Tubatse Ferrochrome TFC 

TFC was initially built as a three-furnace operation in 1975 as a joint venture between Gencor Ltd and Union Carbide Inc (USA). In the same year, the Union Carbide Inc. shareholding was taken over by Samancor, and in 1989 Samancor acquired the Gencor Ltd shareholding. During the years 1989-1990 the plant was expanded to five furnaces with the sixth furnace being built in 1996. The plant is situated in Steelpoort, Limpopo Province and is in close proximity to ECM. The core business of the operation is the production of charge chrome using six SAFs, one metal recovery plant, and a Pellet and Sintering Plant (PSP). The smelting complex includes Tubatse Chrome, a joint venture with Sinosteel and NST Ferrochrome (Pty) Ltd.
